From Revit to your printer in four steps
Turn a Revit model into a watertight, scaled STL for your 3D printer. PrintBIM never changes your Revit model.
Four steps
- Open a 3D view of the building (or select the elements you want), then click Add-Ins › PrintBIM › Print Studio.
- 1What to print: Building, Building + site, or Building + linked models and site. PrintBIM leaves out furniture, fixtures and annotations automatically. Use Review elements… to change that.
- 2Printer and scale: pick your printer (or enter its build volume), then press Best fit for the largest scale that fits in one piece, or choose a scale such as 1:200.
- 3Press Build print model, check the preview (drag to orbit, scroll to zoom), then Save STL…. Open the file in your slicer at 100 %; its units are millimetres.
What PrintBIM does for you
- Fills enclosed interiors, so thin walls don't have to stand on their own. Courtyards and passages open to outside air stay open.
- Closes tiny gaps between elements that can't print anyway (default: narrower than two nozzle widths).
- Thickens free-standing thin parts (canopies, parapets, fins, railings) to your wall target, only across their thickness.
- Cuts small parts below the lowest floor (for example lift pits), so the model sits flat on the bed. You can keep them with one click.
- Splits large models into closed parts that fit your printer, saved together as a ZIP.
- Checks the saved file: every edge closed, no degenerate triangles, correct orientation.
Every change is listed under the preview with a one-click way to undo it. Professional mode shows all settings: resolution, gap width, thin parts, splitting and flat base.
Tips
- At small scales (1:500 and smaller) details under about 0.2 mm merge; that is below what a 0.4 mm nozzle can print.
- Save your printer and scale as a profile (Professional mode) to reuse them.
- Nothing is written until you press Save, and cancelling keeps any existing file unchanged.
Licence
Sign in with a free PrintBIM account (the badge in the top-right of the Studio). The free plan gives you unlimited exports, for buildings up to 50 m across and 20 m tall; each carries a small printbim.com mark cut into the roof and front facade. A licence (Pro, Studio or Perpetual, see printbim.com/pricing) removes the mark, allows bigger models and adds split parts and linked models (Studio). After signing in, PrintBIM works offline for two weeks at a time.
